Within minutes, she halted near small thorn trees. “These are votab. Their roots are edible.”

Both of us ripped several out.

Eve’s right hand changed into a circular saw and cut the roots into small pieces. Our waist-mounted pouches opened, and we placed the roots in them. The pouches closed and we departed.

Eve said, “After a human consumes these roots, they hallucinate.”

I blinked. “Will humans see animals that aren’t there?”

“On the contrary, quantum graph evaluations, based on four thousand human central nervous system responses, indicate that humans will smell bitter and sweet odors, ones that are fake.”

“That sounds harmless.”

“Perhaps.”

I had to ask, “What do you mean by perhaps?”

“From time to time, Jane and Aito use odors to spot dangerous beasts.”

“I’ve heard about that. A lot of Aito use odors to find predators.”

“Correct. Once she consumes these votab roots, it will be harder for her to smell beasts.”

I shuddered. “We need all the help we can get in terms of noticing predators that are close by.”

“Exactly.”

To our left, a distant creature howled. Ooooobboo.

My stomach muscles tightened. “What made that noise?”

“My DNAE is offering conflicting results.”

“What does that mean?”

“There is a twenty percent chance that a Balor made that sound. However, a creature that isn’t in my archives might have made it.”

“What kind of creature is it?”

“It’s six feet long with four legs. No more information is available.”

I exhaled, trying to relax. Both of us retraced our steps.
